"What on earth is internet dating?" Sandra questioned, between mouthfuls of pasta. She and Jessica had been trying to meet for lunch for months and today was the first time their work schedules had allowed it to happen. "Well, we met in that online forum that I like to visit and found out that we have a lot in common," Jessica explained, "so we meet up through instant messaging and we chat the evening away together." She had been anxious to tell Sandra all about Tony. There weren't very many people who would understand or be tolerant of the way they met but she was sure that Sandra would be open-minded.
"It sounds... I don't know... different?" Sandra replied. "Well, sure, it's not particularly conventional," Jessica continued, "but it's actually a nice way to meet someone. You take all the physical nonsense away - at least in the beginning - and you really figure out what you have in common."
Sandra had to admit that Jessica seemed so much happier than the last time they'd met. She recalled Jessica being really torn up over her latest failed relationship. The guy had cheated on her, lied about it and, eventually, Jessica had caught the two of them together. It had been messy and she had taken a good long time to recover from the betrayal. Yet sitting here, talking about her internet dating life, Jessica seemed truly happy.
"So what's he like?" Sandra asked and Jessica proceeded to describe Tony as respectful, kind and possessing of a great sense of humor. That sounded like someone Jessica would be drawn to - but how much could she truly know? This was internet dating, not real life, in person dating. "What's he look like?" Sandra ventured. "Well, it took us awhile to exchange photos but he is gorgeous!" Jessica enthused.
As their conversation rolled on, Jessica finally confessed that she and Tony were going to be meeting in person in about a week. They had waited quite a long time but it seemed that they were both ready. Sandra had heard all about the perils of internet dating and cautioned Jessica about the potential dangers. "Oh Sandra, please don't worry! We've talked on the phone for more hours than I can count, we know about families, friends, jobs, all of it. I'm really not the least bit nervous - just really, really excited."
Sandra swallowed her concerns and focused on her happiness for her friend. "Jess... I really hope he's everything you want. I hope his handsome face will look deep into your eyes, over a candle light dinner, and just sweep you off your feet." She was rewarded with the biggest smile and a squeeze of her hand as her best friend in the whole world thanked her wordlessly for being someone that always understood.
