He was such a shy man. He was a hard worker, brought home a decent pay

He was such a shy man. He was a hard worker, brought home a decent pay cheque, was nice looking, honest and respectful. To everyone else, he appeared to be a great guy with a great life. No one would have known he was so lonely.
Everyone knew that John lived alone in a beautiful apartment. Everyone envied him for finding a place so close to the office that he could walk to work, yet high enough above the buzz of the city that he could sit on his balcony, look out over the river and feel a gentle breeze caressing his skin. John had so much to offer - but he had been so hurt by his first love.
To anyone who would listen, John always described his first love as the most beautiful woman in the world... someone he still dreamed of holding and caressing every night as he fell asleep. She, however, had many dreams that did not include John and the day she left him she never even said goodbye.
People at the office tried hard to set John up on blind dates. Every woman in the office wanted to date him or had a friend that would be "perfect" for John. Some of the guys suggested he set up a profile on a dating site and "have some fun." None of them understood that John was just not that type. He would find someone when the time was right and she would be the woman he was meant to find.
So, every day, John went to work and gave his best effort. Every night, on his walk home, he would stop in at the corner grocery store, grab a carton of milk and have a chat with the owner, Liz. She would always let him know when the new issue of his favorite magazine was in or when she had ordered in a new brand of pasta sauce she thought he'd like. Over the years, they'd become such wonderful friends.
This one night, John was late from work and Liz was about to lock the door to the store. He frightened her as he quickly rounded the corner. He apologized and said he really had nothing in the apartment for dinner and was hoping she'd let him pick something up really quick. She smiled, held the door open and then locked it behind him.
As John stood looking at the meager selection left in the meat case, Liz came up behind him. She quietly asked if John might consider joining her upstairs for dinner, as she was about to eat anyway. John turned to her and, for the first time, noticed how truly beautiful she was. She was staring at the floor, too shy to meet his gaze. He graciously accepted her invitation and his heart warmed at her smile. That was the night that John finally stopped falling asleep, dreaming of caressing his first love.
